COVID-19 Policy Update

When United Methodists began wearing masks in public in 2020, it was based on a simple Wesleyan principle: Do no harm. When in doubt about what to do and what steps to take, to follow this simple rule means to err on the side of caution and care of others. In the spirit of not doing harm, Jefferson First UMC will be returning to mask usage in worship beginning August 8, 2021.

Jefferson First has striven to follow the guidance of the CDC and the Iowa Annual Conference, prayerfully discerning how to live out these guidelines in our own context. Last week, the CDC recommended inside mask usage for all people, vaccinated and unvaccinated, in response to new data and concern over growing COVID cases. In the past seven days, the number of positive cases in Greene County has shot up. At the time of this writing, the positivity rate is at 22%.

Last night, committee heads at the church had a virtual meeting to discuss the data and our next steps. The unanimous decision was to do no harm and return to mask usage in worship, effective this coming Sunday. The plan is to look at the data weekly and remove the mask policy when the Greene County numbers come back down. I hope that those at Jefferson First UMC will be part of the solution to bringing COVID cases down through vaccinations and mask usage in public. I will be in prayer for those who are ill from COVID and I am thankful that there are no local reports of hospitalizations or deaths due to COVID at this time.

We are not alone in our return to mask usage in worship and we are not alone in doing our part to care for others in the midst of the pandemic. This Sunday we will look at Jesus, our hope and our anchor in the storms of life. I hope to see your masked face in worship at 9:30 or to hear that you’ve joined us on YouTube live. As COVID cases surge in our country, we need the hope of Jesus more than ever.
Peace,
Pastor Heather Dorr
